A solid film whose genius moments come from its eerie setting and creepy atmosphere
Killing Grounds was, at first, a tough watch for me. Seeing how much realism and detail was added to the scenes made me truly feel bad for the victims. One of my favorite parts about this film was their use of the past and present families and showing the stories connect with one another. On top of this, props to the creators not using cheesy jump scares to try and score a cheap shot with the audience. Instead they help develop all of the characters so you feel for each one, good and bad.

Overall, a great twisted horror film that will keep you engaged at all parts, with a bit of a lack luster ending.

Well worth your time
We saw this as part of an AACTA preview and so had the producer, director and Aaron Pedersen in a Q&A afterwards.

This movie is tight and very well written. I usually cringe when seeing movies which are written and directed by the same person. These movies tend to either need development and someone to say "no" that will not work or meandering messes. There was none of that in this movie.

Everything is fleshed out so we do not get two-dimensional characters. We care enough about everyone and even the dog and baby have their moments, that are believable and interesting. I like the decisions and twists in the plotting. There is nothing ridiculous (read: American exceptionalism) in it. People don't suddenly morph into Rambo in this movie and it is better for it.

This is violent but not gratuitous splatter-porn.
Its a Solid film.
This is a alright movie with nice elements that makes a good thriller. The movie takes time to introduce the main characters in the first act of the film. BUT i don't care for these characters because of their dumb choices. Green Room is a much better film. Damien Power does a good job directing this film for his directing debut. He is able to tell this story in a interesting and non linear way like Christopher Nolan's Dunkirk. This is a very nice beautiful movie with nice cinematography. The realism and brutality within the film is gut wrenching and on point. The third act is pretty lame and the antagonists felt unrealistic. Though the performances were really great.
I'm sad to say that this movie was so disappointing. I was looking forward to seeing it and I was left bored and out $5.99 for renting it. Killing ground had some good reviews but I'm not sure what people found so amazingly chilling and frightening. It also ends with too many open questions. I will say that it was shot nicely.
A little Aussie gem
When you watch a large variety of movies something you come to notice is that every different country makes films very uniquely. I've come to find that I quite like Australia's way of story telling. Their characteristics are likable and realistic characters, they're not afraid of extreme violence and they like to have a little bit of a psychological edge to their story. All three of those traits are apparent in 'Killing Ground' which turned out to be a surprisingly enjoyable experience.

I didn't go into the film with a lot of hope, simply because it looked low-budget and I am finder it harder and harder to come across good quality, low-budget films. It really pleasantly surprised me however. It gets off to a very patient and slow start with almost no action taking place for at least the first 30 minutes. Usually this would be an absolute killer for any horror/thriller movie, but on this occasion the characters were strong enough that I could enjoy that period of the film regardless.

I like a film that isn't afraid to be bold and this is certainly one of those. It's a film that doesn't want to be forgotten about any time soon. It wants to stick with you for a while to come. Not simply by having some pretty explicit violence at times, but more so by the psychological twist that is created near the end. The whole film is quite masterfully put together. One not to be missed.
A well shot but pointless and forgettable torture fest
Aaron Pederson came off Mystery Road and Goldstone for....this? He should be hitting Hollywood with his talent, but instead he'll settle for a script with little originality or imagination, and fellow great actors wasting their talents. Harriet Dyer is a terrific performer and has shown her charisma on the shows No Activity and The Other Guy, but is only required to be frightened wife captured by a maniac here, big boost into cinema that one is. Aaron Glenane is a convincing psychopath, but his and Pederson's characters are given no motivation or explanation for killing, they just do it for a laugh it seems. The only praise this deserves is for its beautiful cinematography, given the proper cinematic look with a proper film camera and lenses, rather than the grainy fly on the wall style that outstayed its welcome years back. Shows off the amazing countryside but then again does little with it but put in a hackneyed story and boring characters. Another miss for Aussie film. Except for people who love watching people get shot in the head.
Deeply Disturbing Well Made Realistic Horror Film!
I've given this an 8 because it simply refuses to pander to American horror cinema sensibilities. Make no mistake about it, this film is brutal, shockingly brutal, the director does not let you feel at ease for a moment. But this is not cheap torture porn in the Eli Roth style, no this has a realism about it which is far more disturbing. The story is told in an intelligent way and you see how the different threads all tie together slowly. The murderers/perverts are the most vile I've ever seen portrayed on screen, they truly are beyond redemption and the acts they commit are sickening to the point that I nearly turned the film off but I persevered because I wanted to see how it concluded. All the actors/actresses are excellent in their respective roles, the location is well chosen. So if you don't mind being disturbed by realistic films then you'll find much to hold your attention here.
Autistic Reviewers Opinion Of This Movie.
Couple Sam (Harriet Dyer) and Ian (Ian Meadows) both set out on a camping trip. While slightly lost and not knowing exactly where to go to make camp they come across a guy by the name of German (Aaron Pederson) who points them in the right direction. They then find the perfect place to camp right next to a huge, orange, empty tent which appears to be empty. As time goes by the family never return to the tent. Sam and Ian realize something is not quite right.

Let me start off by saying that this is probably one of the best Australian films ever to be made. Director and Writer Damien Power clearly had a huge vision of what he wanted and he goes in strong. He gives us a film that is never boring, has excellent character development, has us on the edge of our seat, and has created a new meaning for going camping in the Bush. What Damien Power also does is keep thing realistic. He never tries to make anything look over the top or like a fantasy like most Thrillers or Horrors. It was a great job by Power to direct this film and he brought something not for the faint of heart, but something that can make us think twice about going camping.

The acting is top notch. Harriet Dyer (who plays Sam) was perfect for her role. Again...realistic, down to earth, very Australian and not afraid to fight back. The two psychopaths German (Played by Aaron Pederson) and Chook (Aaron Glenade)are just downright scary. What makes them scary aren't the fact that they're psychopathic, horrible people...it's the fact they they are just like people who live next door to you, someone you meet down at your local bar, someone you could be friends with. Both Pederson and Glenade are so realistic in their roles that it isn't even funny...it's terrifying! Chook (Aaron Glenade) steals almost the entire film. A man who has been lead on the path of being a psychopathic killer and it becomes nothing but a normal, daily, funny routine. Chook is possibly one of the scariest psychopaths to ever appear in Australian cinema...or possibly ever! While people may complain about how unoriginal the movie is or how there are a lot of unanswered questions Damien Power avoids the big cliché by twisting it around and creating something new. There is loads of Australian humour in it which only Australians will understand. One of the best Australian films to ever be made. This movie has made me realize that camping just isn't worth the risk! 5/5 - Jay

Killing Ground has merged on out on screen in a exclusive screening we got to attend, I had very low expectations for this film and surprisingly after it had ended, I was in shock, awe and amazed with this independent film that manages to be not only scary but very well thought out with its themes and characters.

Story goes that a couple are heading out to camp in the wild bush land of Australia, having arrived at their destination they encounter another tent that was there prior to their arrival but find no one is present. What unfolds is not a mystery, but a shocking act that will make the couple try to survive and make it out alive. There's so much to grasp from its plot, but incredibly the concept of fear and what happens around ourselves and others is greatly told.

The direction and writing from newcomer director Damien Power is a birth of a new talent to have surfaced in Australia, boldly portraying the scary factors of not only being outside in the bush but the people we know very little of. From its tension driven villains to the helpless victims, it's not a bloody splatter fest but rather than a straight forward story that reveals more and more of its lead up to the climax and the factors that contributed to it.

Overall, Killing Ground is a solid ride of thrills, character and concepts with bite and power. Solid cast, great direction, worthy script and strong tension play all together in this must see film, even if you liked the first Wolf Creek you will find gold in this thrill ride.

4.5/5 - Nick
Decent thriller but nothing new if u have seen Eden lake, Storm warning n Preservation.
Saw this recently on a pirated DVD. It is about a couple who retreat to the woods on a romantic camping trip. Things don't go well....... Nowhere close to Eden lake, Preservation or Storm warning. These names should be suffice to explain in short what this movie is about. In Eden lake, the tension, violence n the ending was shocking. While in Storm warning, the gore n the killings were brutal. Preservation was decent but Killing ground failed to impress. Well, it wasn't boring or messed up but at times i found it hard to sit through certain scenes. Two things i cannot bear even on screen is rape n any harm towards kids. Thankfully the director avoided abusive scenes but even some off screen scenes were a bit too hard for me. The character development of the bad guys were done well. They are given nearly as much screen time as the main leads. The bearded villain looked like Mel Gibson from Blood father. The movies non linear approach to story telling might appeal to some viewers but there isn't any originality in it.
