Storyline: In this interplanetary adventure, a space shuttle embarks on the first mission to colonize Mars, only to discover after takeoff that one of the astronauts is pregnant. Shortly after landing, she dies from complications while giving birth to the first human born on the red planet - never revealing who the father is. Thus begins the extraordinary life of Gardner Elliot - an inquisitive, highly intelligent boy who reaches the age of 16 having only met 14 people in his very unconventional upbringing. While searching for clues about his father, and the home planet he's never known, Gardner begins an online friendship with a street smart girl in Colorado named Tulsa. When he finally gets a chance to go to Earth, he's eager to experience all of the wonders he could only read about on Mars - from the most simple to the extraordinary. But once his explorations begin, scientists discover that Gardner's organs can't withstand Earth's atmosphere. Eager to find his father, Gardner escapes the team...

High hopes... then, disappointment
As I'm a big science fiction fan, I had a huge expectation going in to see this film. The setup was perfect. First human to born in Mars, coming to visit Earth. I started to get all kinds of goosebumps. But, it wasn't that good, as I've hoped for.

I did tolerate most of the 'nonsense' science stuff. But, the misery didn't end there. Other than that setup, it felt boring. Pacing wasn't good. The story, made me question too many things. It's a adventure, young -adult movie. Teenagers might like it more. Asa Butterfield was brilliant in his character. Gary Oldman seems over the top. Expecting more movies with this kind of setup, but with better story and better film making.
Watch it yourself.
Do not get confused by some comments. This is a very nice story. Well played. Despite all the space theme is very down to earth and emotional in the right sense. I remember about a week or two ago reading very bad review on this very site. After that probably most people will turn away from this movie. Don't. It was I think some poor, lonely woman with loads of anger and just needed to sill it out. IMDb should read before posting reviews as they sometimes very misleading.
The Boredom Between Us!!!
The first human born on Mars travels to Earth for the first time, experiencing the wonders of the planet through fresh eyes. He embarks on an adventure with a street smart girl to discover how he came to be. The Space Between Us is a 2017 Adventure Drama starring Gary Oldman, Asa Butterfield, Carla Gugino and Britt Robertson. Now let me start with the few positives that this film has which is mostly the cast and the characters because all 4 actors do a good job and the chemistry between Butterfield and Robertson is at least decent nothing more also i do like some parts of the story like a kid being born on Mars or just the Space stuff as a whole and they did a good job with the cgi and that is where the good stuff end now let's go to the bad stuff because as much as this film has some good acting and characters some of their choices are dumb as hell for example there's a 'Martian' rip-off scene where Gardner Elliot visits his mother's grave and then as he leaves he gets into this car and starts driving very fast because he is angry and he almost kills himself and you're going to see a lot of dumb things in this film for example the kids jumping from a plane just moments before it explodes and blows up a barn or something like that, the plot holes are many and although i do try not to think of them and at moments they did bother me that much? But how does Gardner breath in Earth? didn't he live for 16 years on Mars? I mean i'm not a scientist or whatever but some stuff don't make sense also according to IMDb Goofs there's no way that someone from Mars can actually communicate with someone from Earth in the exact same time also Mars seems like is very close to Earth for some reason? But the worst part and the part where the film lost me completely was the ending where Gardner basically tries to kill himself by committing suicide in the Beach because he thinks and he feels that his mother is there? Makes total sense right? And then we get the dumbest and stupidest plot twist ever when we find out that Gary Oldman is actually his Father? Couldn't he tell him from the very first time when he met him and he was in quarantine? The whole 2 hours of this film were basically pointless and they could have been avoided easily from the very first start if he had actually told him that he was his dad and trust me he gets a lot of chances in order to tell him those 4 little words. The Space Between Us is supposed to be a Drama but i found myself laughing more than actually crying or feeling anything i actually felt anger since i spend 2 hours of my life in a complete sh*tfest of a movie starring 4 actually good actors and trust me i don't blame them and i was actually going to be a bit more fair to this movie if it wasn't for that awful ending personally i would advice you not to see this film if you're under the age of 20 if you're 12 or 13 and you don't care about plot holes and you like plot twists like that? You might actually enjoy this film a bit? I mean their stealing cars, planes and clothes for 2 hours sounds fun right? Not really!!!!!
A lost boy who wanted to see the world!
This is basically a movie about two teenagers on the run. They meet for the first time. The girl is streetwise and assertive. The boy is geeky and naive. They drive off through an America with lots of great scenery, and there's humour and romance and some feel good music. This is what is at the heart of the movie and it works well.

What doesn't work well is the back story, about the boy being born on mars. It makes for a pretty uneven film that starts out as a sci-fi movie with a crew of astronauts heading out to the stars, then morphs into something completely different. The special effects in space are wasted, because this part of the story didn't really need to be shown. Plus, some of the incidental music doesn't work too well.

The makers should've just stuck to the story of a lost boy who wanted to see the world, and a girl who just didn't fit in and was willing to show it to him.
Great Movie!
This movie was a good Sci-Fi adventure movie mixed with some romance and fantasy. My friends and I went to see this together and we all loved it. It has the perfect amount of adventure, cliffhangers, plot twist, and romance. The ending definitely leads me to believe there might be a second movie. This movie can be a bit cheesy at times, but all around I thought it left a great message. I like how one of the characters that isn't from Earth goes from living on Mars to Earth and there is a big change in environment and when he meets the girl from Earth that he has been instant messaging from Mars and follows her around like he knows what he's doing. I also think that the two main actors, Asa Butterfield and Britt Robertson, did a great job portraying their characters and they were a perfect fit for their part.
Just awful and ridiculous
Don't waste your time on this awful movie.Where do I begin, the acting is the most terrible thing in this movie, even though there are great actors/actresses involved in it. I think it's mostly due to the terrible director. There are scenes where you see things imagined in the future that don't make any sense. When I saw it I said the director must be really old and doesn't know anything about technology and all. And I was right, he's too old school to have a realistic vision of the future.

I would say that during the making the whole team was too lazy to try to perfect the scenes, this is the only explanation that I could come up with. By the way, the whole story isn't that interesting. It's like someone said to himself "what if someone was born on Mars? let's make a movie about it" I mean, how the heck did a pregnant woman get into a spaceship in the first place??!!. These are not the places where people get to make such mistakes. The crew must have gone through a thorough examination prior to their trip. Especially, right before they leave. And yeah, the boy had to be so stubborn, even though he never been in touch with other children, he only lived with old scientists. How did he get this childish attitude? genetics?

There are things that just ridiculous like transparent laptops that allow any stranger to peek into what the user is doing!! and they are huge, like why would a student carry a glass made, transparent laptop to school when you have Ultrabooks that are smaller, lighter, and give you more privacy. Just like I said, the director is too old to imagine such things, and the whole crew is too lazy to point out the issue to the director, they just want to get paid regardless of the final outcome.

I honestly couldn't go through the first hour of the movie, it's ridiculous.
Don't waste your time
I tried to watch that movie and even tried to explain to myself how in a hell 20+ weeks pregnant woman could pass all health checks for expedition to Mars, but when they had instant video chat between Mars and Earth I gave up and turned it off. Such stupidity is unforgivable. I feel offended by that idiocy. I feel sorry for Gary Oldman, he probably needs money bad and I feel angry to story writers; guys, it should be criminal to be that ignorant even in Hollywood. This movie does not even worth a space on hard drive it occupies or torrent download time, not to mention paying anything to watch it. Don't waste your time watching this feat, go for a walk instead.
A real Martian connects with a girl in Colorado.
My wife and I enjoyed this movie, we watched it at home on BluRay from our public library.

Set in the very near future an entrepreneur and his company (think Elon Musk and SpaceX) have established a colony on Mars, they name it "East Texas". In addition to all the other goings on a baby is born to one of the crew members, a human baby but also a real Martian because of the location of his birth. Sadly his mother dies during childbirth and, afraid to the negative publicity, it is all kept quiet back on Earth. The boy is raised in secret.

Forward 16 years and we meet the boy, Asa Butterfield as Gardner, now very bright teenager with a boring life. But he has met a girl online, he tells her he is in Manhattan. She is a teenager, a student in Colorado, Britt Robertson as Tulsa. They form quite a close friendship via Skype or some similar communications technology.

Gardner wants to travel to Earth but scientists and doctors are worried that his development in the weak gravity of Mars has made his bones and internal organs unsuitable for Earth, but they allow him to try anyway.

So that is the story, Gardner wanting to see Earth, meet Tulsa, and find his dad, while dealing with the inevitable medical issues. This is a very pleasant and entertaining movie. Gary Oldman is good as the head of the company, Nathaniel Shepherd. And as always, Carla Gugino, one of my very favorites, is good as Kendra Wyndham who mostly raised Gardner on Mars and is the closest thing he has to a mother.

SPOILERS follow: The lady who was to become Gardner's mom was one of the astronauts, the captain of this mission, but she unfortunately became pregnant right before leaving on the several month journey to Mars. Unable to turn back she had the child on Mars but she died in the aftermath of childbirth. Gardner had a photo of her and a man, he assumed was his dad, upon tracking him down in California finds out he is his uncle instead. We finally learn that Nathaniel Shepherd is his dad. Gardner's medical issues force him to return to Mars but Tulsa trains so that she can travel there too. As does Nathaniel.
A cynical take on romance
OK first of this is very scientifically inaccurate and a little silly so if you can't get over that then this movie isn't for you. However once I ignored that it was a great movie not like most romance films. Whereas romance films are usually filled with nothing but hope this was just romantic moments in a world neither of them were meant for and the constant feeling that things wouldn't work out. Great sense of humour which is as cynical as the rest of the film. It's a constant battle between hope and reality - something most romance films ignore.
A touch tale of romance and self discovery
I will say that the film was rather cool since it was awesome to see Asa butterfield normally known for darker roles gets a chance to lighten up and work on his comedy side. He plays gardener Elliot the first human born on Mars after his mother Sarah dies giving birth to him, however gardener condition causes him to have an enlarged heart that would kill him if he was to stay on earth for a long period of time. However when he interacts with Tulsa from earth, he wants to be able to meet her in person and experience earth customs. He also falls in love. He also wants to find out how his father is so that is also one of his adventures as well.
